FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum loan amount I can get?+

It depends on the lender: ICICI Bank goes up to β‚Ή3 crore, SBI and most PSU banks up to β‚Ή1.5 crore, and NBFCs like Avanse offer β‚Ή75 lakh+ unsecured for premium global universities.

Do I need collateral?+

Not for loans up to β‚Ή7.5 lakh at PSU banks (IBA norm) or up to β‚Ή40 lakh at most private banks and NBFCs. Larger amounts usually require collateral.

Can I apply without a co-applicant?+

No β€” a co-applicant (usually a parent, guardian or spouse) is mandatory across PSU banks, private banks and NBFCs, as banks assess repayment capacity mainly through them.

What is a moratorium period?+

The period during and after your course (typically course duration + 6–12 months) when no EMI is required, though simple interest may accrue.

When does repayment start?+

After the moratorium ends β€” course duration plus 6 to 12 months, or sooner if you get a job before the course ends, per your sanction letter.

Can I prepay without penalty?+

Most PSU banks charge zero prepayment penalty. Private banks and NBFCs may charge 1–2% if you prepay within the first 12–24 months β€” always check your sanction letter.

What happens if I miss an EMI?+

It damages both your and your co-applicant's CIBIL score. Contact your lender proactively β€” many offer moratorium extensions or step-up EMI plans instead of default.

How is interest calculated during moratorium?+

Simple interest accrues during the moratorium. If you pay it as it accrues, your EMI later is significantly lower than if it's capitalised into the principal.

Which lenders finance US universities?+

SBI, ICICI, HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo and InCred all have strong US portfolios, with ICICI and Credila offering the highest amounts.

Is a GRE/GMAT score required?+

Not mandatory, but a strong score (GRE 320+ / GMAT 700+) can help unlock lower rates at some private banks as a proxy for earning potential.

Can I get a loan before admission is confirmed?+

Yes β€” most lenders issue an in-principle sanction based on a provisional or conditional offer letter, useful for visa applications.

What forex documents are needed?+

A student forex card application, RBI LRS declaration, and university wire-transfer details are typically required at disbursement.

Is the CSIS scheme still active?+

Yes, the Central Sector Interest Subsidy scheme continues to provide full interest subsidy during moratorium for eligible EWS students.

What replaced Padho Pardesh scheme for overseas study?+

Padho Pardesh has closed down. SC/ST and minority students can now apply for the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) via Ministry of Social Justice/Tribal Affairs or state-level Minorities Development Corporations.

How do I claim interest subsidy?+

Apply through the National Scholarship Portal or your bank's nodal officer with income and admission proof β€” the subsidy is credited directly against your loan account.

Who is eligible for the Dr. Ambedkar scheme?+

For OBC/EBC/DNT students clearing with >60% academic merit and family income < β‚Ή2.5 lakh per annum.
